Our charcoal is made from woodlands within the South Hams and is made and sold in the South Hams meaning the mileage from woodland to BBQ is very small. Folks use our charcoal for cooking on little BBQ's up to Kamado BBQ's, it has been used by chefs to cook skewers and to smoke dry chillies.
The vast majority of charcoal used in this country comes from abroad, mainly South Africa. The wood used for this charcoal isn't suitable for charcoal hence why they cover it in petrochemicals to help it light, this taints the food and is generally just not nice. It obviously travels a long distance and isn't treated well so ends up being in very small pieces which isn't good for BBQ use.

Blacksmith charcoal
We grade our charcoal finings a second time over 10mm mesh to produce a smaller grade charcoal ideal for blacksmiths. We currently supply 4 different blacksmiths who are using it with great success.
Biochar
After we have graded out the BBQ and blacksmith charcoal we are left with finings from 10mm to dust. This fine grade of charcoal can be used in gardens and animal bedding (we use it in our chick bedding). Research is still ongoing about the benefits of biochar but so far it is positive. Being absorbent while also increasing drainage and providing a place for nutrient storage and slow release.
